about

I wrote "This Is Your Life" around the time of my youngest son Theron's birth - When my oldest, Quinn, was just turning two, and all I could think about was how it was no longer just about him - with a new baby in the house, we were going to have to adjust the attention and time Quinn had been showered with during his first two years. The chorus came automatically to me and inspired the rest of the song - "This is your life, this is your now/this is my dream for you, somehow." That to me says all there is to know about being a parent. We soon learn there is no letting go - We grow as our love grows. Our children grow and blossom in the light of that love. This is my song for Quinn.

lyrics

WHY DO I
FEEL NO ONE ELSE COULD KNOW YOU LIKE I DO?
AFTER ALL, THERE’S NEVER BEEN ANOTHER
LIKE THE ONE AND ONLY YOU
SO I GUESS THERE’S NOTHING LEFT FOR US TO SAY
AND I KNOW THAT WE WOULD JUST GET IN THE WAY
BUT IF YOU KNEW JUST HOW MUCH THIS HURT WAS,
THEN WOULD YOU STAY?

‘CAUSE THIS IS YOUR LIFE, THIS IS YOUR NOW
THIS IS MY DREAM FOR YOU SOMEHOW
I WANTED YOU TO KNOW INSTEAD OF LETTING GO
I’VE LEARNED TO LET YOU GROW

HERE WE ARE,
SO MUCH OF ME LIES HIDDEN IN YOUR SMILE
WHEN YOU CRIED, I’D ONLY HAVE TO HOLD YOU
FOR A LITTLE WHILE
I SOMEHOW KNEW THE WORDS TO EASE YOUR PAIN
AND YOUR LAUGHTER ALWAYS KEPT AWAY THE RAIN
HOW CAN I HOLD BACK THE HANDS OF TOMORROW
FOR JUST ONE MORE DAY?

AND THIS IS YOUR LIFE, THIS IS YOUR NOW
THIS IS MY DREAM FOR YOU SOMEHOW
I WANTED YOU TO KNOW INSTEAD OF LETTING GO
I’VE LEARNED TO LET YOU GROW
I JUST WANT YOU TO KNOW INSTEAD OF LETTING GO,
I’VE LEARNED TO LET YOU GROW.
