"Lotus" was a song I developed when I first started writing specifically for the album, Every Little Thing. Before I had anything, I posted a verse and chorus backing track on my Facebook page that night, without lyrics, without any idea of a theme for this song. That rolling bass synth through the verse and the lift off that the song takes as it goes into the chorus kept bringing to mind the image of a Lotus flower. I don't know why, there isn't anything particularly "eastern" about the music of the song. But that image - The image of the flower rising above the human condition, of being above obsession and worldly vice, to find grace and blossom in the healing warmth of the sun - it guided me on a very personal journey as I wrote the lyrics. The first three lines of the verse say all there is to say about being lost in our own bliss. There comes a point when there's nothing redemptive left but the grace of those around us. If we're lucky it's strong enough to press through the darkness and the mud and into the sun. I was lucky.
lyrics
THERE WERE TIMES IN MY BLISS
WHEN I WAS FAR TOO GONE TO MISS
ALL OF THE LITTLE THINGS THAT REMIND ME WHO I AM
THERE WERE THINGS SAID AND DONE
I COULD HAVE BEEN THE LONELY ONE
AND SO BUT THERE BEFORE THE GRACE OF YOU I STAND
YOUR PATIENCE I COULD NEVER UNDERSTAND
IF IT WAS ANYONE BUT ME
I WOULD HAVE BEEN GONE BY NOW
IF YOU HAD ONLY LET ME BE
I WOULD HAVE BEEN GONE NOW
BUT IN THE DARK YOU FOUND
THE LIGHT THAT SET ME FREE
AND IN THE END I FOUND THE BETTER PART OF ME
SO I WALKED ON THE EDGE
THROUGH THE DARKNESS WHERE WE BLED
UPON THE CROSS I BUILT ALONE WITH MY OWN HANDS
BROUGHT ME DOWN, TOOK ME IN
BECAME THE SAINT BENEATH MY SIN
SO I COULD RISE ABOVE OBSESSION & DESIRE
HOW DID I EVER DESERVE THE FAITH
THAT FEEDS THIS FIRE?
IF IT WAS ANYONE BUT ME
I WOULD HAVE BEEN GONE BY NOW
IF YOU HAD ONLY LET ME BE
I WOULD HAVE BEEN GONE NOW
BUT IN THE DARK YOU FOUND A LIGHT THAT SET ME FREE
AND IN THE END I FOUND THE BETTER PART OF ME
LIKE A FLOWER THROUGH A RIVER OF MUD
PRESSES EVER INTO THE SUN
I KEPT BELIEVING THAT MY HEART
COULD GROW UNSTAINED
IF IT WAS ANYONE BUT ME
I WOULD HAVE BEEN GONE BY NOW
IF YOU HAD ONLY LET ME BE
I WOULD HAVE BEEN GONE NOW
BUT IN THE DARK YOU FOUND
THE LIGHT THAT SET ME FREE
AND IN THE END I FOUND THE BETTER PART OF ME
A criminally underrated album of a criminally underrated and underexposed genre. The production values here are so authentically 1980s. A good balance of traditional hard rock, synths, and strong melodies, with a spooky yet nostalgic feel, with the songs carefully curated for a strong experience start to finish. For those lonely nights, stuck in your bedroom, reminiscing days gone by: listen to this. cosmopolis
