"I Think I Know" began life many years ago as a jazzy piano number written for me and my friend Kevin Miller's demos back in college. It was originally inspired by one of Prince's off the beaten path works (I don't remember which now, but probably something from around the time of Sign O The Times). Lyrically I was more focused on images than concepts, and as a result the song is one of the more cinematic pieces I've written. When I reimagined the song last year for "Every Little Thing," I did so with 20 years of perspective and musical reference, and I was set on making the musical arrangement more in line with the noir story line. Inspired by Elmer Bernstein and Bernard Herrmann (and mostly the latter's scores for all those great Hitchcock films), I gave the song a more sinister treatment, and tried to build upon suspense and dread as the horn arrangement built throughout the song. It's a different piece in tone and style than the rest of the record, but I also remember a time when eclectic records mattered (anyone else remember Queen's "A Night At The Opera?").
lyrics
IT’S FOUR AM & I DON’T KNOW WHERE MY BABY IS
I THINK SHE SAID SHE’D SEE ME ‘ROUND
AND WHILE I’M STARING AT MY REFLECTION ON THE CEILING
MY BABY’S NOWHERE TO BE FOUND
THERE’S A NUMBER IN THE DRAWER BY THE PHONE
A STRANGER’S NAME I’VE NEVER SEEN
DRAWN ON A NAPKIN
FROM A CAFE BY THE STATION
STUCK BETWEEN THE PAGES
OF SOME FOREIGN MAGAZINE
I THINK I KNOW WHERE MY BABY IS TONIGHT
I’M GONNA FIND HER
FROM THE WINDOW I COULD WATCH HER
LEAVING LATE LAST NIGHT
SOMETHING SOFT INSIDE HER BURNING LIKE A FIRE
I THINK SHE KNEW WHERE SHE WAS GOING
WHEN SHE LEFT HERE
SHE’S A LOVER BY NATURE BUT A DEMON BY DESIRE
I HEAR THE WHISTLE OF THE 4:10 LEAVE THE STATION
SOMEONE’S HEART IS BREAKING
IN THE FIRST LIGHT OF THE DAWN
AS LONG AS THERE ARE SONGS TO WRITE
SHE’LL SIT BEHIND THE COUNTER
DRINKING COLD BLACK COFFEE TIL THE MEMORY’S GONE
I THINK I KNOW WHERE MY BABY IS TONIGHT
I’M GONNA FIND HER
I THINK I KNOW WHERE MY BABY IS TONIGHT
I’M GONNA FIND HER

A criminally underrated album of a criminally underrated and underexposed genre. The production values here are so authentically 1980s. A good balance of traditional hard rock, synths, and strong melodies, with a spooky yet nostalgic feel, with the songs carefully curated for a strong experience start to finish. For those lonely nights, stuck in your bedroom, reminiscing days gone by: listen to this. cosmopolis
