about

Like "I Think I Know," "Hoping For You" is another song from years gone by, rearranged and reimagined for the CD. "Hoping For You" may have been one of the first complete songs I ever wrote, and I think Chris Couse and I may have written it in a Sunday School classroom after youth group one Sunday night. Our church had an abundance of pianos, and I recall most of our time outside of the pews being spent with Chris sitting in front of one, and me standing beside of one. When we wrote "Hoping For You," it was an 80's pop rock arrangement, with a piano/vocal intro that veered into serious arena rock territory when the drums kicked in by the second verse. While the song lacked any semblance of a chorus, it had a fantastic sax solo, and a terrific bass slide that I copped from Deon Estus on George Michael's "One More Try." With Alan Dozer on drums, Robb Stacey on guitar, and Brian "Biff" Hughes on bass, we took the song to our summer youth camp in Lake Junaluska, NC and killed it in the talent show.

I wanted to use the song for this record, and knew the arrangement would have to be totally revamped. Instead of an arena anthem, the structure of the song lent itself well to that of a hymn. Borrowing yet again from George Michael and his arrangement of "The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face," I reduced the song to bare melody and took a left turn with the Beach Boys "Pet Sounds" era background vocal arrangement. The final touch was John Spinks' haunting nylon stringed guitar solo. It's one of my favorites that I've ever written, and those songwriting and jam sessions at Wesley United Methodist Church will forever be a part of my DNA.

lyrics

SLEEP COMES LIKE A DREAM
DEVOID OF LOVE, ABSENT OF PASSION
ANOTHER DAY STILL ALONE
TIME I TOLD YOU HOW I’M FEELING

BUT THEN I THINK, AND YOU DON’T HAVE TIME TO LISTEN

CAN’T YOU SEE THAT IT’S ME THAT YOU’RE MISSING?
I STAND ALONE, JUST ME AND MY CONVICTIONS

WELL YOU TOLD ME ONCE BEFORE
THAT OUR LOVE WAS SOMETHING SACRED
WELL I’LL DO MY BEST TO TRY, BECAUSE THIS LOVE IT WILL NOT DIE
AND I ASK THIS QUESTION

WHY

SO I SLIP INTO MY BED
AND WITH SOME LUCK I’LL HEAR THE PHONE RING
BUT FOR NOW, I LAY HERE WAITING
HOPING FOR YOU
FOR YOU
