about

In November of 2011, I was struggling to finish "Every Little Thing." I had come off of a successful Kickstarter campaign to release the record, but everything else was quickly unravelling. The voice issue I had struggled through for most of the year showed no sign of departing, and I had 3 key songs finished that needed time and focus to properly track and produce. I could feel my career drifting away, and the financial pressure of canceling shows and reducing my schedule was mounting. One night I was feeling particularly moribund, and I located an old karaoke track of "Goodnight Song," one of my favorite tracks from the Tears For Fears CD, Elemental. It was a song I could still easily sing, the lyrics were a bit of a catharsis as well. "Get some honesty/Take the best of me, and then the rest let go." There was a real fear that if I had indeed given all I had, I should have held something back for myself. These are the lessons learned through adversity that make us wiser and stronger.

I published the karaoke demo to my Soundcloud account, and I was frankly shocked by the positive feedback the song garnered. A friend of mine suggested that the cover song appear on the CD, and I soon saw that the tune plugged in perfectly with the track sequence of the CD - Giving me a respite from the unfinished tracks until my next CD. The song appears on the CD with me and my band replacing the karaoke track with our own interpretation of the tune. Ironically, it reached #1 on regional rock radio Class X FM - A feat that the more acclaimed single "Stay" was unable to accomplish.

lyrics

HERE ON THE STAGE THE TIME HAS COME
AMID THE STRAINS OF BE MY ANGEL, OF ROCK IN 2/4
TIME MAY KEEP ALIVE THAT OLD SWAN SONG
THAT WE’VE BEEN PLAYING FOREVER
TIL THE TIME MAY BE RIGHT TO SAY GOODBYE
MY VOICE IS ACHING; I’M TONGUE TIRED
AND THE SOUNDS WE ARE MAKING ARE SO

GOODNIGHT SONG, PLAYED SO WRONG
BLAME THE CROWD THEY SCREAM SO LOUD SO LONG

GET SOME HONESTY
TAKE THE BEST OF ME AND THEN THE REST LET GO
IN EVERY SITUATION IN YOUR TIRELESS RAGE
STEP OUTSIDE YOUR CAGE AND LET THE REAL FOOL SHOW
I SHOULD HAVE STAYED ‘ROUND TO BREAK THE ICE
I THOUGHT ABOUT IT ONCE OR TWICE
BUT NOTHING EVER CHANGES
UNLESS THERE’S SOME PAIN, AND OUR

GOODNIGHT SONG, PLAYED SO WRONG
BLAME THE CROWD THEY SCREAMED SO LOUD SO LONG
GOODNIGHT SONG, PLAYED SO WRONG
BLAME THE CROWD THEY SCREAM SO LOUD SO LONG
